In 2023, 1,595,779 candidates registered for JAMB examinations according to the Board; however, only 600,000 were given admission.

For instance, according to the examination Board, 452,443 candidates applied to study Medicine and Surgery in Nigerian universities, whereas only 78,578 slots were available, leaving a number of 373,865 at the mercy of being thrown to other courses or missing the admission altogether.

For social science courses a total number of 239,018 applications were made whereas only 97,744 slots were available, again leaving a whooping 141,274 candidates from gaining admission.

What to do if Your Name is Omitted.

The first thing you need to be aware of is that admission is not given to all eligible students at once.

Admission comes in batches.

The first list is known as the Merit List.

The import of this is that students who perform exceptionally well in their examinations are considered and given admission first, while others are admitted at a later date.

According to the admissions policy, only 45% of the total number of eligible students are expected to make the Merit list, leaving 55% for the other lists.

Students who are admitted based on merit would still have to wait for the other lists to be released before proceeding for registration in their various institutions.

As stated earlier, the first list is the merit list but not the only list.

Check other Departments

Sometimes a different course of study is given to applicants, applicants who do not find their names on the admission list under the department they applied can check other departments that are closely related to their interested field.

For instance, an applicant who applied for law and couldn’t find his or her name on the first list can check the admission list for the department of criminology and security studies.

Or a student who applied for nursing can check the admission list for department of radiography.

To be more certain, applicants can go to the school website of the institution they applied and check by typing in their names to check their admission status.

This will bring out only the list of students who are admitted with the particular search name.

When registering for the examinations, a candidate is given the opportunity to select 4 institutions.

The first is usually a Federal university, the second a State university, the third a Federal or State Polytechnic and lastly a College of Education.

When you are unable to get admitted in your first choice University, you can go for the second choice or the third choice depending on your interest.
