Some fun cool facts about IMSU!!
About IMSU
Imo State University (IMSU) was established on February 23, 1981, by the Imo State Government under Law No.4, driven by the vision of Chief Sam Mbakwe to fill the gap left by the absence of a federal university in the state.
Initially located in Uturu, IMSU operated as a multi-campus institution to serve the diverse educational needs across the state’s senatorial zones. However, by 1986, the university consolidated its operations in Uturu due to space constraints.
The creation of Abia State in 1991 resulted in IMSU’s facilities being ceded to the new state, necessitating the university’s relocation to Owerri in 1992 under the leadership of Chief Evans Enwerem and formalized by Law No.2 of 1992. Professor T.O.C. Ndubuizu was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor to oversee this critical transition.
IMSU’s academic programs initially followed a collegiate structure, which later evolved into faculties by the 2001/2002 academic session, reflecting the university’s steady growth in both student and staff populations. The institution offers a wide range of programs, including full-time, part-time, sandwich, and outreach courses, catering to a diverse student body.
The university’s reputation for academic excellence was solidified when it was ranked first among state universities and tenth overall in Nigeria. This recognition is a testament to IMSU’s commitment to its motto, “Excellence in Service,” which guides its dedication to teaching, learning, research, and community engagement.
The university’s restructuring was further formalized by Law No.5 of 2004, signed by Chief Achike Udenwa, marking a significant milestone in its history
